ALTOONA'S INGOLD HONORED BY NACDA AS ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR
6/22/09

Penn State Altoona Athletics Director Fredina Ingold, who has served the university in a variety of capacities for more than 30 years and played a critical role in the growth of Lion athletics, is one of four Division III Athletics Directors in the country to receive the Under Armour AD of the Year Award, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced.  Ingold was the Central Region recipient representing Division III, which alone consists of more than 400 institutions in the United States.  She will be recognized on Saturday, June 20, at a luncheon during the annual NACDA convention.

In 1986, Ingold was appointed Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Penn State Altoona, and she also served as the Director of Student Marketing and Enrollment from 1994-1999, a period of time when varsity sports did not exist at Penn State Altoona.  Upon the reinstatement of varsity athletics in 1999, Ingold returned to her position as athletics director and has guided the 15-team intercollegiate athletic program to new heights over the last several years.

One of her most significant achievements has been the successful transition of the intercollegiate athletics program from junior college status to NCAA Division III membership. Under Ingold’s direction the total number of sports offered has expanded, there have been improvements to and construction of athletic facilities; and the program has grown in stature as a member institution of the Division III National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC), and the Eastern Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Under her influence, Penn State Altoona athletics were recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education for demonstrating a history and continuing practice of expanding women’s sports programs.  Penn State Altoona saw the number of female athletes increase by 129% from 1999 to 2006, a direct credit to Ingold, who is considered a pioneer in women’s athletics.

Just this year, Ingold began serving on the NCAA Division III Management Council, one of the highest legislative bodies in Division III.  She is also a board member and President-Elect of the ECAC.

A distinguished athlete in her own right, Ingold was a member of the first high school basketball team at Altoona Area High School, first women’s varsity volleyball and basketball teams at Penn State Altoona and was later a member of the softball and inaugural women’s volleyball teams at University Park.  In 1990, Ingold became the first woman inductee in the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2002 she received the Robert. J. Scannell Roll of Honor Awared for serving the Penn State Commonwealth Education System, Athletic, Intramural and Recreation Programs with distinction.
