Can they make it four in a row?  The AMCC baseball coaches think so, and thus Penn State Behrend has again been chosen to win the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball title in 2011.  The Lions are coming off a 31-16 season that saw them finish second to Frostburg State University in the regular season standings but come back to take the league title in the tournament.  Challenges will almost certainly come from Mount Aloysius College, picked to finish #2, and Penn St. Altoona, who was voted into the #3 spot.

Two players were selected to share the Preseason Player of the Year award: Mount Aloysius junior catcher/ DH Matt Cornetti (Nanty Glo, PA/Central Cambria HS) and Medaille College senior outfielder  Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East HS).  Cornetti was a first team All-AMCC and first team Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection last season. He led the Mounties in 7 statistical categories including hitting (.442 BA) and doubles (23), where he was ranked #8 in the country.  He is also a D3Baseball.com Pre-Season All American.  Lumadue is a two-time All-AMCC outfield selection.  He hit .424 in 2010 with 16 doubles and 4 HR.  He ranks as the Mavericks' career leader in HR, RBI and total bases.

The Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors go to Penn St. Behrend senior Ryan Zamiskie (Jeanette, PA/Penn Trafford HS).  Named to AMCC All-Conference First-Team in 2011 after registering a 7-1 win-loss mark with 4 saves, Zamiskie recorded a stellar 1.50 ERA and was ranked third nationally  He appeared in 17 games, and in 54 innings pitched he logged 50 K’s, striking out 22 hitters in 23 innings.  Overall Zamiskie led the AMCC in ERA, appearances, saves, fewest runs and fewest earned runs.

The AMCC kicks off conference play on Saturday, March 26, and the championship will be May 12-14 at the site of the top seed.  The winner of the tournament will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
