MEN'S SOCCER CROWN

 


Reflecting what has developed into a coin-toss rivalry, Penn State Behrend edged out defending champion Medaille College in the 2013 AMCC coaches' poll.  The Lions earned five first place votes in the balloting to the Mavericks' four.  The two squads have 11 AMCC crowns between them, including the past eight.  La Roche College, whose only league losses last season were against Behrend and Medaille by identical 2-1 margins, was expected to finish third.

The three squads dominated the awards balloting.  Offensive Preseason Player of the Year honors were shared by Medaille senior midfielder Pablo Ordonez (left) and La Roche junior forward Bryan Weimerskirch (right).  Ordonez was a first team NSCAA regional All-American selection and first team All-AMCC  in 2012, recording 8 goals and 7 assists for 23 points.  Weimerskirch was a first team all-conference selection last season.  The Redhawks' leading scorer, he recorded 28 points (12 goals, 4 assists).  Behrend defender Eric Hackworth (left) was selected as the Defensive Preseason Player of the Year. The AMCC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, Hackworth was also named NSCAA Regional All-American and first team All-AMCC.
The AMCC kicks off conference play on Saturday, September 28, and the championship will be Saturday, November 8, hosted by the number #1 seed.  The winner will receive the AMCC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Junior M/F Jesse Saltarelli (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius)…Co-captain of 2013 squad...second on team in shots (21) in 2012 while playing a primarily defensive role...moved to a more attacking role in spring, has potential to lead team in scoring in 2013...provides strong leadership, great vision and organization under pressure.

Sophomore F John Imbimbo (Newtown, CT/St. Joseph)…Became a starter mid-season in 2012...stabilized back line and helped cut goals against in later part of season...moved to CF in spring, shows great ability to hold ball and creativity in off-ball movement...good control and ability to take on defenders, great vision and distribution...overall contribution cannot be measured solely by goals.
 

HILBERT COLLEGE

2012:  5-4 AMCC,  7-9-1 overall


Senior D Michael Gee (Dansville, NY/Alfred State CC)…Third team all conference selection in 2012…anchored the back line on a team that reduced goals against by nearly 20 from the previous year...excellent 1v1 defending and cover...wins everything out of the air.

Senior F Jon Davison (Edwards, NY/LeMoyne College)…Second team all conference in 2012…second on team for Hawks in points with 18 on 8 goals and 2 assists...constant threat despite being double teamed late in season.

Junior F Bryan Weimerskirch (Saltsburg, PA/Springdale)…First team all-conference selection in 2012…recorded 28 points (12 goals, 4 assists) to lead the team offensively.

Junior M Ryan Luffey (South Park, PA/South Park)…Second team all-confernce last season…recorded 28 points (12 assists, 8 goals)…led Redhawks in assists and ranked #5 in NCAA Division III.

Senior D Jacob Conde (Hartford, CT/Bloomfield)...Two year starter...major part of the Mavericks' backline that only allowed 13 goals in 2012...inspirational leader defensively during the Mavs' 2012 playoff run to the NCAA tournament last season.

Sophomore D Xavier Cardona (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug)...Third team all-conference selection in 2013...  3 goals and 3 assists on the year…co-captain.

Sophomore M/F Patrick Chea (Accra, Ghana)...Mounties’ second leading goal (6), assists (4) and point scorer (16) last season.

Sophomore F Alex Leonard (Scottdale, PA/Southmoreland HS)… Two time third team all-conference selection...Started every game last season…. Bobcats' leading goal scorer (12) and 2nd leading point scorer (26)...tied for third in the AMCC for goals scored, third in goals per game .67, and sixth in points...also earned AMCC All-Academic honors.
